If you're trying to do without xorg.conf it may be using the VESA driver instead of the Intel driver. AFAICT, the VESA driver can't be expected to support the younger 1440x900 mode. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_display_modes To see whether 845G 1440x900 capability actually exists prior to figuring out how to do it in X, you can try booting with vga=864 or 866 to set 1440x900 on your consoles, according to the table at the above URL.
