It is a challenge-response process - when I log in, it works like this: 1) enter contract-nr (not account-nr) 2) read challenge (6 digits) from website 3) open response-generator (a small calculator like device), insert smartcard for the contract, enter pin-code for smartcard http://files.jessen.ch/bank-card-reader-device.png 4) enter challenge, hit ok. 5) enter generated response on website 6) done. With some other sites, I use a one-time-pad, i.e. a list of pre-generated code-sequences.
