So I am looking for a free, if possible open-source, wallet that does not depend on some online company and that can handle both currencies (or, in the worst case, a wallet for ETH only, and handle bitcoin in its original wallet).
This is not on Linux but Android (and ios). If you have an Android phone and use your BTC away from the keyboard, I recommend the Mycelium app. It's simple, can hold BTC, ETH and FIO. It is also open source and completely independent. As you may know, a wallet is not really a coin wallet. It is a wallet that contains the private keys that allow you to interact with the coins on the blockchain. To initially access the blockchain, you use 12 or 24 words of HD (hierarchical deterministic) that you saved in a safe place. Since I first installed Mycelium I have changed my phone 4 times and no problem at all getting my BTC back with my 12 word HD. But keep in mind that the security is a 6-digit pin code. If you lose your phone, you need to start a new wallet (with new HD words) and transfer your money to that wallet to be safe. But that applies to whatever wallet and device you have. PS. I guess you should be able to run Mycelium on Linux if you use Anbox or similar. -- /bengan
