This is a weird one.
The volume control applet in TW on my new T570 says "No output or input devices found," but I can play audio just fine. I just have no control over the volume, unless it's built into the application (such as streaming audio through my browser.) It also doesn't display applications that are currently playing audio.
running "lspci" shows "Audio device: Intel corporation device 9d71 (rev 21)"
Any way that I can get the audio devices to show up in the applet?

It's become a "must have" item in oS and now in TW it would appear. Pulseaudio is built with _ALSA_ as its base. To get sound working properly when you are having problems with sound, start 'konsole' and, as user, run 'alsamixer' and press 'F6' and select your sound card; then press 'F5' and adjust sound levels/select-close channels. After you have finished press 'ESC' and you should be done. While doing all this it would pay to have some music, eg, playing so that you can select which channel needs activation if you are not getting any sound to begin with.
