Your password didn't fail if you were able to log in at a terminal.
It may be that the X server refused to start, which may be due to a proprietary video driver. (Most likely the case if its Nvidia).

It is not really a contradiction. The password is valid under the basic Linux system but does not let me login to the graphical mode. So can anyone help provide a solution. The video card is Nvidia. Whatever video driver is being use would have be from the opensuse dvd. I don't know how it could be using a proprietary driver.
