THANKS TO ALL FOR THE INFO!!!!
The next time I turn off my system :), I'll check which chip I have. I'm betting that it's the 30 pin.
Also, it looks like I'll be going for the Creative SB 16 ISA sound card.
Just to let you'all know, I can't afford a new computer so I'm doing a major upgrade of this one. I'm adding the max amount RAM, a new HD (around 6Gb), new video card, sound card, and either a zip 100MB or LS-120 ex disk drive. Then I'll have to wait 2 - 3 years before I can talk my wife into a new computer :).
Make the right move, and upgrade your motherboard and cpu while you are at it. For $150 you can get a pc-100 motherboard with an AMD k6 300 processor. --
I am running a three year old P166 Sony VAIO. I made the same decision that you did and jacked the RAM to 64MB and added a Western Digital 6.4 GB HD. It gave me three new 2GB partitions and is much faster than my older HDs. I also upgraded to an EXTERNAL 56Kb Zoom V90 Modem. The extra RAM and Additional HD made a new machine out of my old one. I expect the 2.2.x kernel to give me 2 to 5 times more speed than I have now with the 2.0.36 kernel. That should hold me for another 2-3 years. By that time the commodity computer will be a 1GHz box with 256MB RAM and 32GB HD. By then I should have a cable modem.
