If you are using an external zip drive plugged into the parallel port, you must first enable scsi support, then scsi disc support, and then, under the low-level drivers, enable support for the zip drive. If you are mounting a dos formatted disk, it will be recognized as sda4, while a ext2 formatted disk will be recognized as sda1 if you run fdisk and set the partition at 1.
