What client you'll need to make the connection depends on whether your ISP uses PPPoE or not, and whether or not you use a router. Unfortunately, my ISP uses PPPoE over Nortel's "1-Meg Modem", and that's why I am able to recommend to you Roaring Penguin's PPPoE client. It's available at

Now for a bonehead question. Can someone point me to a resource that explains how DSL works, i.e. what exactly is required to make a direct DSL connection between two arbitrary machines over a phone line, besides the router and appropriate client software on one end? I.e. what does the "host" machine need to have?
Thanks

You might take a look at http://www.coyotelinux.com/coyote.html and see if this meets you're needs. It sounds to me like he is asking about DSL equipment so he can connect two computers or offices like one can easily do with two modems. There was a link on slashdot.org or linuxtoday.com a few months ago to an article where a guy outside the U.S. wanted to setup a DSL connection between two offices and the local telco wasn't offering xDSL yet. He got a leased line between the two offices, bought two ADSL bridges from Alcatel, hooked em up, and his offices were connected. Well, it wasn't that easy, but he accomplished it with the local telco only helping him with the physical line. Unfortunately I don't have the link.
