Hi Sven, it is a common failure of the boot loader. Lilo used to do that, and grub has an error 18. I solved it by using the Install DVD and use the option to boot an installed system, when it asks in the install process if it is a new install or update, under "other options" if I can recall correctly. When it is up and running, I reinstalled grub in the mbr. If you have a windows dual boot, it will also be in the grub menu. Some notebooks may have the problem, because of a setting in the bios. This was so in the Thinkpad.
