Suse Kernel Patching

Hi all, I'm trying to update to the newest mantel kernel from my 2.4.12 kernel via the patches-2.4.13-5.tar.bz2 file. I read the kernel how-to on pathing but I didn't get very far with it. I tried issuing the command 'bzcat patches-2.4.13-5.tar.bz2 | patch -p1' from within the /usr/src/linux-2.4.12-SuSE directory, but up came a bunch of stuff about already exsisting files etc etc...and Reapplied etc. I wasn't sure at this point what to do so I thought I'd ask b4 I really fux0red something up.
