KDE4 is widely recognized as not being ready for use yet. There was a huge thread here on this list about the stupidity of releasing it without MAJOR Warnings about functional limitations.
If you want it to work, use KDE3 for another 6 to 9 months. If you want it to look pretty use KDE4 and put up with a lot of missing functionality.
Yes, you're right, probably I should give up. I stayed up till 3 am trying to get things as close as possible to what I wanted, but there are still a lot of minor but annoying problems. I really liked KDE 3.5, everything was just perfect. Going back to 3.5 tonight.
