I moved the current gtk-config to gtk-config.old (just to keep it until this is resolved). Reinstalled gtk-devel using rpm -Uvh --force and a new gtk-config did not show up. I then reinstalled gtk using rpm -Uvh --force and did get gtk-config back....But the error is still there. My system will *not* see gtk. I am really lost. Well, that's your problem. gtk-config is a relatively simple shell script, the purpose of which is to give programs you compile the locations of your include files and libraries. If you install it from some other source, it will give the wrong locations and the compile will fail.
gtk-config is included in the gtk-devel rpm and that's what you should use
