Thanks for the suggestions. I had tried right-clicking on the desktop before and disabling the screensaver but that still didn't help. You can always call up xscreensaver-demo from a terminal and select disable screensaver directly.
Pete You can also right click on the desktop and go into properties to disable the screensaver.
