Hi, I bought recently a simple headset (2x stereo jack) for my mom in order to use skype from her desktop running SUSE 8.2. (We kept this system, because 8.2 performed quite well on the p2-400MHz CPU she has.) I made several tests to call her and in fact except her microphone, everything worked well. I checked up her mic and on all other comps around and it was OK, except her :( She has KDE with kmix running and the level of the mic was set to maximum. When deactivating the device from the mixer window, you could hear a "click" and the slight echo was also gone from the speakers. She has a "common" SBlaster-128 PCI, but only the statically linked .tar.gz-extracted version of skype; others didn't work at all. I know that from such a dummy description it is not really possible to find out what is wrong, but I would like to be sure, that 1.) SUSE 8.2 has generally the same multimedia properties as later 9.x releases, 2.) our soundcard has strereo-jack for the mic as well, 3.) we don't have issues e.g. with a missing amplifier, etc. In addition I attempted to record my voice via mic on her computer, but all the installed 2-3 sound recorder software were just frozen quickly... Please, could you just suggest me a way to do a precize checkup without upgrading e.g. to SuSE 9.1?! Alternatively I would be glad to hear from anyone using any version of skype on SuSE 8.2 and would help me to solve this situation via screenshots or alike. So just to sum it up, I think it's rather a simple (?) mic-issue on that particular 8.2 comp and has in fact nothing to do with spype. Skype was just the way, how it first showed up.
