Are you referring to a Dell Dimension 4400 Tower PC? If so those are old, and would likely have a Pentium 4 so it should work fine. WiFi will not require hplip or openJDK and should only require you to install the necessary drivers for your WiFi hardware. If you do not have Atheros, which it sounds like you do not then they more than likely will not be available from the Installation DVD. In my experiences with Dell they typically utilize Broadcom which has closed source drivers. although I have not really seen any Dell tower PCs that include integrated WiFi though. What is the actual computer model and what is the actual hardware you are using? If you can boot from a Live CD or Live USB run the: `lspci && lsusb && cat /proc/cpuinfo` utilities to collect all your hardware info.
