Hi all,
I've never done this so please bear with me. I've got two computers up and running now. Both are 486s, both have SuSE 5.2 on them. I've got one network card in each with a twisted pair cable connecting them.
I don't know what type of card is in each, but I think they both work. So my questions are:
#1 How do I tell what card each has and /or do I need to know?
Look for the driver loading in dmesg. You should see something like: 3c59x.c:v0.99H 11/17/98 Donald Becker http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html eth0: 3Com 3c900 Boomerang 10baseT at 0x6500, 00:60:08:04:f4:3e, IRQ 10 (Your io port will be different.)
#2 What do I do on each machine to get to the other? (Please keep it simple. <G>)
ifconfig. Make sure the first three octets are the same. 192.168.1 is good. If they are not, then they are on a different network Use YaST to fix. Make sure the last octet is different, and is neither 0 nor 255.
#3 Anything else you'al can tell me would be helpful!
Read sections 2.1 - 2.4 of the Network Administrators Guide about 10 times.
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
