Many wifi services in hotels etc., require you to complete a username and password login on a webpage to access the service. The laptop wifi device will connect to the service, then when you try to load a page in your browser you are redirected to the login page. Once logged in, you can use email and other internet services.
I have a dual boot Dell 1525 Inspiron laptop, running Windows Vista and openSUSE 12.1 with KDE 4.8.4. The above wifi login process works well on Windows, but I cannot get it working in openSUSE. I started by using the Network Manager plasmoid, but it wants the login username and password before it will establish the connection, whereas these are not required until you get redirected to the login screen in the web browser.
Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, how do you deal with it? I have in KDE 4.7 basic NM icon in sys tray (no change to default install), I use to see such wi-fi as open. I connect (no problem here) to it using NM and launch browser. No problem here... Have a nice day! Vojtěch
So it does work (for you). That's reassuring, all I've got to do is work out what I'm doing wrong in NM.
Bob
I just noticed something that I earlier missed in your note. For some *IDIOTIC* reason, the "geniuses" that developed that plasmoid decided that people cannot be trusted to set up their own WiFi connections and required the root password to do so. This was discussed a while back and even Linux Torvalds weighed in on the absolute stupidity of this decision. This policy makes it impossible for someone without the root password to connect to new WiFi. Think of the impact of this on a travelling employee, who does not have the root password. This defeats a major reason for portable computers. Like I said, it's *IDIOTIC* to put it mildly. So, you have to set up an unencrypted connection and you'll be asked for the root password to do that. After that's going, you then have to log in with a browser. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
