Well, once upon a time, SuSE decided that the default filesystem would be reiserfs, which was not even included in the upstream kernel sources, it had not yet been accepted. It was considered experimental. But they did. And there were bugs, and some people lost data. Yes, I remember one such, had to reformat my filesystem. But here we are now... where we /still/ consider reiserfs to be one of the best filesystems in existence - because SuSE took the plunge and made us use it.
