Generally speaking, this list is not for non-technical opinions at all, though predictably there's a certain amount of it here. This list is for questions and answers, information, recommendations, etc.
And my answer wasn't informational? OK. That's a matter of opinion.
It most certainly is not for any old rant on SuSE, disconnected from any intent to improve it for the user or for the user community in general.
OK. I guess the performance issue was discussed earlier (I remember a discussion around 8.3 or somewhere in that timeframe), so why is it still sluggish than? If SuSE tries to win the desktop (As they told during the Linux Expo), I think they should do a better job at the performance. If it's yast or configuration related: fix it. Find a way to get it right instead of relying on fast hardware. If it's codesize or code optimizing related, again: fix it. They have a reputation to keep. (And I haven't even mentioned the fact that I paid around EUR 100,= for each and every version of SuSE )
It's not that you're unwelcome, but one must ask why someone would monitor such a high-volume list that does not pertain to software they are using or are contemplating using and then speak up only to say that the writer is not a member of the SuSE user community because they were unable to get SuSE Linux to meet their expectations.
First of all: What makes you a member... The fact that you have bought version 6.1 to 9.3 and using it or not?.... Tell me. Is there a decoderring involved? Do you "members" have a secret handshake? It's all the same operating system. Gentoo, Fedora, Debian, SuSE, name them all. It's basically the same codebase with some patches and/or added packages... In my opinion a distro-war is totally insane. If you don't like it, switch or build it yourself. I was lazy and switched... As for following lists: Being a Linux developer (Userspace and kernel) since 1993 I'm always interested in the issues that come along in other distro's than my own. I also follow several Redhat related lists (Alpha and Intel), the Kernel mailinglists, KDevelop, KDE-bugs. MICO and Qt-related stuff. The sum of all the problems reported, will lead you to a general problem in the software if all distro's report the same... True? That's why someone is following several lists and occasionally answers a question... Just to service the community by fixing problems in the software... Just for fun, not for the credits.. I don't want to start a fight with anyone and I'm not looking for recognition. I have my opinions and you are entitled to your own. That's the freedom we have to give each other.
