3. The sane backend has bug that prevents you from going to high resolution. Although I can see in both xsane and kooka resolutions up to 3200 it does not work. I can get 1400 or a little more and then complains that "can not start scanner out of memory" which of course is not true (I have 2GB and plenty of space) I saw this thread: https://alioth.debian.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=303493&group_id=30186&atid=410366 So if you can go to 2400 using the epson drivers you are doing better than me using sane.
4. I also installed the win software that came with the scanner under VMware and works very well although I do not use it since I discover vuescan. My interest were scan slides and many at the time. Terry, I d'l Vuescan and set it up for a 4800DPI scan of a neg. strip. At the end of a preview scan, it "hung" and now won't start. I emailed the author with logs, so we'll see what he has to advise. It looks like a great piece of software, IF it will run properly with 10.3 and the Iscan driver.
Fred:
1. can you scan at 150 DPI for example?
2. did you do the changes that are in the linux realease note that come with vuescan? They is in a html file in the same directory as the installation. There is a paragraph there devoted to your model 4490.
3. I just scan a picture of my dog at 4800.
A system variable apparently didn't "work" yesterday.....didn't get an error. It works FANTASTIC now! What I find of interest, is that one of the Iscan developers told me that the 4490 won't scan higher than 2400 with the Iscan driver. Yeah right.......sure does, and even though I haven't had the oportunity to check a lot of old negs yet, it certainly does work! Thanks for the heads up, Terry!! I bought the "standard" release and like you, I can't praise it enough! Fred -- This message originated from a Linux computer using Open Source software: openSuSE Linux 10.3.
