Is there a group called audio? It is possible that root is a member of audio and user is not. In that case, the user can be added to the audio group under user maintenance.

Thanks, that worked. Strange that a user would not be a member of audio by default...
On a server with 2000 users, I would not want them to all be in the audio group. That would make /etc/group hard to read. But, I can see doing it on a workstation with a handful of users, and it's all configurable somewhere in yast. Or just edit the "GROUPS" entry in /etc/default/useradd and make sure audio is one of the groups, for future user adds.
