I want to play around with X programming and thought I would try Qt. I discovered that there is a more recent version available -- 1.41. I have completed step 1 in the installation instructions (gunzip ... tar ..., etc.) Now I come to step 2: "Set some environment variables in .profile or .login, depending on your shell." It then lists six variables. I realize that this is a less than brilliant question, but I can't find the answer in the manual: How do you set an environment variable? More specifically, how do you set up Linux so that the environmental variables are set when you boot the OS? One of the variables (PATH) is supposed to "locate the moc program". What is the "moc" program? If I install ver. 1.41, is it going to screw up any other programs, like KDE? If these answers can be found in the manual, just a page reference would be great.
