It's an idea worth considering. I'll wait a couple of days to see if anyone comments on it, pro or con. I assume that v4.6v will be in oS v11.4; is that correct? If the DVD will offer only v4.5.x, I think I would prefer to upgrade only to that now.
Another idea worth considering, especially in light of the bag-of-worms of KDE4 release numbers, would be to wait for another month or month and a half, and let 11.4 make up its mind what KDE it will offer.
Finding how to upgrade to v4.5.5, by the way, turns out to involve more than just consulting the oS Wiki as was suggested earlier today. The relevant page, which must have been there at some time, is no longer present; the wiki suggests that I seek it in old.opensuse.org or something of the sort, which I did. There is such a page there, but it is empty (except for a line declaring that it is empty). Now you see it, now you don't, and nothing lasts forever, even if it would still be useful.
So I would be happy to have other comments on KDE v4.6.
Don't over think the upgrade process... :-) First thing to consider... do you have a nVidia card and are you using 32bit or 64 bit? Note the conditions of this bug https://bugs.kde.org/251719 As long as you're not using that nVidia driver (eg older binary drivers work fine) on a 32 bit install you're OK. You can do the whole update via the YaST GUI if you don't want to play with CLI (the steps I've given here are quite detailed, so it looks a bit long and complicated, but it's really not that difficult): 1. Open YaST and go to Software Repositories 2. Click Add 3. Make sure that Specify URL is selected (it should be selected by default) and click Next 4. Copy/paste the first Repository URL listed here: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_repositories#Upstream_release_aka._KR46_.28KDE_SC... 5. Type a logical name in the Repository Name field (one that makes sense to you.. eg KDE 4.6.0 Core). 6. Click Next 7. Repeat steps 2 to 5 for the other 2 repos listed 8. For each of the three repos you just added, set the priority to a lower number than the default (99). I set mine to 50. This gives the new repos a higher priority than the default KDE4 repos (lower number is higher priority). 9. Click OK. 10 Import any GPG keys when asked. Then upgrade KDE4 1. Start Software Management 2. Select the Repositories tab (if it's not already visible, click the View button and select it) 3. Select one of the 3 new KDE4.6.0 repository names in the Name box on the left 4. Click "Switch system packages to the versions in this repository" (above the package list) 5. Repeat for the other 2 new KDE4.6.0 repos. 6. Click Accept, and then click Continue on the pop up. 7. Once the upgrade to KDE is complete log out, and log back in again. You may want to reboot just to make sure everything gets a chance to have a clean start after the upgrade. You can of course do all of this at the CLI using zypper. The result is the same. The install should complete without any issues (assuming you're still starting from a clean 11.3 install),. I've tested the steps above this evening on a clean 11.3 install, upgrading the default KDE4.4.4 to KDE 4.6.0 and there were no issues. This update process is the same regardless of what version of KDE you're updating to. The only thing that changes are the Repository URLs. If you go to 4.5.5, you just use the 4.5.5 repositories instead of the 4.6.0 ones. As for pro/con... well as has been stated here on the mailing list many times... no software is bug free, but generally speaking, KDE 4.6.0 is a LOT better than its predecessors. It's still got a ways to go (things like Activities still are not 100%) but in general, it's working very well. If you're unsure about the steps, or want to test the steps before committing to doing the install on your main machine... practice in a VirtualBox guest.
