Discard? Why? Shouldn't it still be under warranty? And as Don wrote, try the drive manufacturer's diagnostic tools. It's unlikely to tell you anything particularly new, but it will definitively tell you what you already suspect. I've found hard drive manufacturers to be really good about warranties. I just had to RMA a western digital drive and I didn't even have to call them, just fill out the form on their website and they send you a new drive.
