I hate this solution, especially as it reeks of the typical Windows "fix" with killing processes or rebooting. Killing the Thunderbird processes, often requiring that to be done 6-10 times often restores full functionality. Sometimes that doesn't work at all and often rebooting "fixes" it.
Any direction or ideas would be appreciated. Try launching tb with all extensions disabled, ie: safe mode https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
It is quite possible you have an extension that is no longer current, broken, or just won't work with your config. I had two running. I deleted one as it was a testbed app that received tests periodically to check T-bird's functionality. The other is an indexing program. I'll try disabling that one if problems continue.
