btw, /etc/fstab *is* a *dynamic* listing of device mount-points and *is* editable and *will* use mount-points *you* assign.
Just for testing purposes (SuSE 9.2 fresh install as of lastnight) I plugged in my flash drive and did not find any entry added to /etc/fstab but there was an entry added to the end of /etc/mtab.
