Boot to the text login, log in (this is assuming you have a dedicated connection... I have cable modem), open YaST, set the install media to FTP and fill in the correct params, the go to the select packages/upgrade menu choice... BOOM! away it goes... This should work as well if you were to go into X, start a PPP connection, then launch YaST and let it run. Over my cable modem it took about 4 hours... All I had to do in terms of pointing to the FTP site was give it the ftp.suse.com address, it found the package folders itself... -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Croxen [mailto:klcroxen@fas.harvard.edu] Sent: Monday, November 20, 2000 3:10 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com; W.D.McKinney Subject: Re: [SLE] ftp upgrade to 7.0 ?
You need to make a bootdisk with the current version of YAST and currentish kernel. You may also need to make supplemental disks with modules, in case your network card is not as mainstream as some. Laptop disk too, if your installation is on a laptop. You can make these current disks from those stored at: ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/7.0/disks Boot from the bootdisk, wend your way through the YAST menus to load the appropriate hardware modules, either from the bootdisk itself, or from modules1 or modules2 as necessary. Then start working your way through the installation menus on YAST. You will have to tell YAST what your current network settings are supposed to be; you will also have to provide YAST either with a nameserver address or the address of the ftp site itself (e.g. ftp.suse.com itself is 202.58.118.5) and you'll have to provide the directory to go to when YAST connects (i.e. /pub/suse/i386/7.0/suse/ or /pub/suse/i386/current/suse/ as you prefer). Then launch the monster and let the it chug away. Be warned that this is not exactly a zippy procedure --even with a cable connection it can take 5-6 hours or more; trying a 56k modem installation, you could probably order the CDs and have them arrive at your house before the ftp install has finished. But it works, and works well and reliably. Cheers, --Kevin

On Sun, 19 Nov 2000 17:09:00 -0900, W.D.McKinney wrote:
