This may be obvious, but after fiddling around for a while I can't seem to find out how to do it - on Linux, I've always used one or the other.
I have a PC with a network card, and a modem. The card is set up to use the gateway for net access, and the modem can dial out directly. I can access the net with the modem fine, but I also want to be able to use the LAN when I feel like it, just to be awkward. However, I can't seem to get the LAN connection working.
IIANM, it is a routing function of what is set as your gateway. If you use dialup as your gateway, don't set a gateway for your NIC. They are separate interfaces and can be used simultaneously. I have 2 NICs and a modem. 1 NIC is for internal network [static address] (one Windows machine for the wife and kids :-) ), 1 is to the cable modem [dhclient], which sets the gateway, and I use the modem to dial in to the office server for maintenance [ssh]. I set up ppp to NOT replace default route (i.e. gateway), and use all 3 at the same time.
