I've also rebooted several times. I upgraded with X up and running, then I decided to shutdown and 1. booted 2.6.0-test5 kernel, but had a problem mounting root. 2. Rebooted the 2.4.20 SuSE kernel and had the user login problem. 3. Rebooted to runlevel 3 and reinstalled the XFree86-server with --force --nodeps. 4. init 5 and was able to login only as root. 5. Rebooted and again, was only able to login as root. Regards Sid. Ben Rosenberg wrote:

I've just upgraded the XFree86-server for the security problem and from the kdm login screen, I can't login as a user, but root is OK with either KDE or GNOME. I moved the user directory and copied the original
kdm.log:Caught signal 11. Server aborting (when I try user login). I would suspect bad memory with sig 11's, but kernel compiles etc. work fine. Any ideas appreciated.
It looks like you've upgrade the XFree pkg without restarting KDM. You must do this because the X server is running so you can use KDM..
