Those are versions of the Linux kernel, not a new OS. If you can't deal with such problems, I'd stay away from compiling an own kernel.

For others: It seems that this is a problem related to the particular choice of the GUID partition table. Or maybe the tools OpenSUSE 11.4 used before? As said before, using an MSDOS partition setup is easy and I never had problems in the past. Now GPT does, so it is related to tools or the structure itself. Anyway, I hope some sensible person can point me in the right direction.
