I installed SUSE 10.0 as update over 10.0.42 and then the card was
immediately recognized.

Weird... My rt2500 cards (one PCI in my PC, one PCMCIA for my notebook) are detected automatically and work flawlessly on 10.0. The driver is GPL and included in the distribution's kernel. Must be something fishy there...
