Tiling support has been merged for KDE SC 4.5, so when that is released you might want to upgrade from a repository. What you refer to from KDE3 would be probably 'qdbus org.kde.kwin /KWin unclutterDesktop', but that's not tiling, that just positions windows in order to overlap as little as possible. If you can write scripts you could try to write one using http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/WMIface?content=40425 that'd do the layout manually in whichever way you'd want and assign a shortcut to this command.
I will give wmiface a try. I can get the list of windows and their current geometry. Does wmiface provide info on things like the visible size of the desktop (e.g., the area into which I can place windows)? I do not see that in the README for the program. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O.
