Hello, I am new to linux, and have found YAST very helpful in getting me started. Now I went to install GIMP v1 and lesstif (I want to take a look at Mozilla), along with some GNOME stuff to try out. Both GIMP and GNOME need >= gtk1.01 so I installed the gtk1.0.4 rpm but nothing seems to find it on my system. The install directions mention editing /etc/ld.conf.so and running ldconfig. But yast warns not to edit ld.conf.so and instead edit ld.conf.so.in. Do I then just run ldconfig as I would otherwise? I must say, I am a bit confused over glib and libc5... Does that mean that rpm for redhat 5 or later will not work on SuSE? I installed the GNOME rpms and their suport files because I wanted to take a look at it. Now SuSE does not ship with (I don't think) mico and guile and all those other libraries. Can I still install them, or are they incompatible with my system. (BTW I am running SuSE 5.2) Now if I run ldconfig I get "warning: can't open /usr/lib/libImlib.so (No such file or directory), skipping warning: can't open /usr/lib/ligdk_imlib.so (No such file or directory) skipping" Yast gives similar messages (I suppose it is runing ldconfig in the setup) I know I've put out a lot of questions. Just to recap... Do rpms for Redhat 5 not work with SuSE? Should I make a habit of downloading the source code? Can SuSE users not use things like GNOME or GIMP v1 because of the the libraries? Using SuSE do you still follow directions saying to edit ld.conf.so files or not? If anybody can start explaining all this new stuff to me, I'd be much appreciated.
