For hysterical reasons. Once upon a time there was a conf.modules. But that was not in line with all other conf files that were called something.conf. So the name was changed. conf.modules should be a symbolic link to modules.conf. This was probably done to avoid breaking things, or upsetting old-timers.. Cliff
