On GeForce2 OpenGL applications might run in software emulation mode on top of Xgl. If not, then at least marchalling the OpenGL commands takes time. Still, the half second stops sound strange.
As GeForce2 is not a supported card, this will probably only be fixed by accident, by the community, or not at all.

It is with 3d ON (there is a fix for the old drivers) and OFF (means: with nvidia-driver and with nv.driver). So it is not the card.....and again Xgl is off. Azerion
