There are several internet posts that reference a minor "tweak" to wine (essentially changing the winecfg to windows98 ) and "Kindle for PC" supposedly works fine. I've done the the winecfg tweak on both my OpenSuse 11.2 desktop and my Ubuntu laptop with similar results.
The "Kindle for PC" program appears to install, an Icon shows up on the desktop, but when the icon is clicked - it tries to launch but crashes. --
If all you want is an eReader for your pc, look at Calibre. It can convert the various formats to whatever you like, catalog your books, and has a built in ereader. It's free and has an easy one line installer. You can find it here: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux.

Sorry, but Calibre will neither READ nor CONVERT DRM protected books.
So forget it for Amazon.
I see no reason Kindle reader wouldn't work under Wine. It does nothing special, and since its free, perhaps the OP should try it and see.
Yeah, I feel slightly "tricked". Yesterday I downloaded a "sample" of the book I was considering buying via the BlackBerry Kindle app. I put the "sample" ebook file in the dropbox and went to calibre to view it. It worked perfectly. So, like an idiot, I bought the ebook via blackberry, put the file in dropbox and then went to calibre to open it. I got the message "This book protected by drm" with a giant red X. So now I already dumped 15 bucks on a book I can only read on my BlackBerry - unless I can break the drm or get Kindle for PC to work under WINE. I agree it seems it should work under WINE, and it shows up as installed in my applications menu under Wine; and if I right click the ebook file I get an option in the dropdown menu open with ->Amazon Kindle for PC Application. Seems that Amazon could have written a linux version since the Kindle is a linux device. go figure. thanks, Regis -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
