unable to ftp from mc

I know that your are supposed to be able to ftp from the command line in mc, midnight commander v 4.5.55, and I have in the past in other distro's. I am now in SuSE 8.1 and have not been able to ftp in mc. /#ftp:ftp.mozilla.org/pub I can from the cl as:> mc /#ftp:ftp.mozilla.org/pub. Am I missing something or is it broken or do I have an env var set wrong?
