AH! KDE settings -> Startup and Shutdown -> Background Services There is a "Removable Device Automounter" option that is enabled. Perhaps you should look into how that works. There's also a an option that "Monitors Recent document folders". I'm not sure of the semantics of that. It may be relevant. There's also a "Directory Watcher" and "Network Folder Watcher" but they are disabled on my machine.
