What is the proper source for a US citizen to obtain a web address? What are the limitations and advantages to various suffixes other than .com (.net, .org)?
There are a bunch of registries on the net, but I can tell you from personal experience that buying your own domain is only the beginning, which is why you should heed Jon's advice and buy from a full service provider (or at least consider the cost in your purchasing decision) - full service meaning: web access & nameserving. Otherwise, you will end up, like I did, thinking that $50 ($30 in my case) for two years, with a URL (www.stuarthall.net) is a good deal - that doesn't go anywhere. I got lucky and had a fellow Linux enthusiast agree to nameserve/web direct my pages. Thanks Thomas B. Stuart Good luck!
