I allowed SuSE to dictate how I partition MY hard-drves on MY system (how Microsoftian!) and followed Mark Gray's advice about the barrier=none addition, and have been running for a while, cross your fingers.
Can see the reviews now if SuSE only had the advanced/manual partition option...Always done manual here, because I have /home on its own partition and I want to make sure it always ends up being selected correctly.
I had installed about 5 times with the manual, and it ended badly; so I used the partitions that SuSE recommended and no problems so far. In the process it blew away the /usr filesytem and placed all of / there ignoring the old / partition along with the /home partition. I had tried the barrier=none mod on my custom partition table and it did not fix the problem.
On a related note, if reiserfs has problems why did SuSE adopt it for the / partition, moving away from ext3 (which was the default on 7.3, I think)?
What issues are you seeing? If you're comparing to SuSE 7.3...Well thats a long time ago in a Universe far, far away and ext3 may not have even been an option. The next version of Reiser seems a little more interesting :). Actually sat through a presentation on it.
I have had 2 reiserfs partitions on this box forever with no problems, just not root which was - by default in the SuSE 7.3 set-up - ext3. In 7.3, I recall, you needed to pilfer RedHat's boot image creator to get the system to recognize the / partition as ext3 and not fsck it. The problems I am having with reiserfs are occuriing in 8.1 and the barrier=none thing is for 8.1; addressing some sort of issue in 8.1. In a nut shell, the system freezes hard with the HD ligh on steady. mg
