Hey Gar --
Almost everything I've learned about Linux and the *nix mentality >has been greatly fostered by this list. I have had excellent >direction, generally courteous guidance, and I lot of people (too >numerous to list) have shown a great deal of consideration for the >new and inexperienced.
Yes, that is a big plus for the open-source community as a whole. People are willing to help out others in need.
If I haven't said it before, let me say so now: This is probably the >best computer resource I have found. I have been so inspired by my >experiences that I have decided to make a career change into Comp >Sci/IT/IS from my present profession of a health care practitioner >(U.S. R.N.).
Are you serious? A career change for one article? Wow, I wonder if the US propaganda agency should read this article and use it to make us all American soldiers..lol... :-)
I will be moving to San Diego in August and have already checked out >the various Universities and Colleges in order to obtain my 2nd >Bachelors degree in this pursuit.
Umm...There is a lot more to a B.S. degree in Computer Science then fooling around with a linux box. You also have to study theory. Have you ever read any automata books? I also hope that you are good in math, as you will probably have to take a Numerical Analysis class for that degree... But if you are truly motivated then go for it! I wish you the best of luck.
I realized that I spend almost all of my free time on this damn >Linux box. I can't seem to learn enough. I am always learning and >find the whole venture fascinating and rewarding.
Yes, linux has definitely matured but is still considered by most to be a hobby OS. This may change within the next 10 or so years. Its nice to be able to examine source code yourself and is a fabulous learning experience as a whole.
For the newbies on the list. Linux is a growing experience. It shows >you what "real" computing can be. Unlike Bills Beast that serves as >more of an appliance, Linux is in a never ending state of >development. It's more about make Information and computer >technologies grow and fulfill it's promise than one might initially >realize.
Lets just hope that people don't get lost in the grand scheme of things. Its one of the reasons of the linux kernel code freezes. People would keep adding enhancements forever and nothing stable would ever be available to the general public.
Once again, Listen to the people here. There are many very >experienced, bright, and knowledgeable people that put themselves >out as a resource.... USE IT AND LEARN.
I agree 100%. Many people who subscribe to this list are very helpful. Whenever I need a german translation I can just turn to my boss who is from Dosseldorf...did I spell that right??? No offense to the germans...Very sophisticated people/culture... Just my 2 cents... ~~Nick _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!
