'cp *' won't copy the dot files which contain the version info.
'cp *' won't do, but 'cp -a' will get what he wants.
The safe way to do this is:
(cd /cdrom && tar cf - .) | (cd /hda11/suse8.0 && tar xvfp -)
Any special reason to do that in subshells? I'd do it as tar -C /cdrom -cf - . | tar -C /hda11/suse8.0 -xvfp - It's a *tad* bit shorter ;-)))) Philipp
