[opensuse] Unable to rip an audio cd into mp3's using 11.2

I've got packman in my repo list and everything I think I need, came from there. I can play them. I seem to ba able to play anything. Neither k3b or dolphin work. All I get when playing one that has been ripped by k3b or via dolphin from an audio CD is static. Oggs and wavs are good. Just mp3s. Is there is a trick other than getting the right packages from packman???
