I have been running X at a colour depth of 24bpp with only one problem. All the icons in Netscape were rendering as very low resolution monochrome images. I never made the association to the colour depth until last night when I installed WordPerfect 8. All the images in the GUI install wizard rendered as a weird looking cross-hatch pattern. This didn't hinder the install in any way and I figured it may just be a glitch in the install. However when I started xwp, the splash screen, the image in the top box and all the toolbar icons were the same. At this point I started thinking of colour depth and switched to 8bpp. Now wp and ns rendered their images perfectly but overall resolution was too poor. Switched to 16bpp and everything now looks great. Why would these images render correctly at 16bpp but not at 24bpp? I have always use TrueColor (24bpp) on Windows and NT and have never seen images render incorrectly. What is different about these images that would cause this?
