I'm really sorry about that... I guess finally the alcohol from last night starting wearing off and my brain started to function again... I don't know how often I read about disabling apic... grmpf... Now the machine is running like a beauty... :) I'll go and move my homedir now and will be back soon with the new machine! Hi,
I've just put my new PC together and tried to install SuSE7.3 on it.
The first try went smooth until it was done with the first CD, then the screen went black and I could see the X cursor, but not reacting to the mouse.
(During installation I used all the defaults, besides choosing some special packets to be installed.)
I resetted the machine and it booted from the HD and resumed the installation
from where it froze before... after it was done with the last (5th) CD, the
tiny clock-like cursor appeared and then the whole thing froze again...
Reset again... continued again and showed me the settings it determined for the monitor... (they were correct) ...after clicking ok, it told me it would try the new settings now and froze again...
after resetting it again it boots from HD again, starts Yast2 again and freezes right away.
What now? Any ideas appreciated...
Johannes
Here are some specifics on the machine:
MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-7DXR CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (Palomino) RAM: 512MB DDR Graphic: Elsa Gladiac 511 TV-OUT (nVidia GeForce2 MX-400) HD: IBM IDE60 IC35L060 NIC: NetGear FA311GR and I put my old Hauppauge WinTV-Card back in...
Hi,
I'm sitting on that new machine again and started from scratch, but the described behaviour is 100% reproducable... it behaves exactly the same and freezes in the same spots...
I have now tried it using ext3 as the fs, but (as expected) that didn't change a thing... I guess I'm gonna rip out the graphics adapter now and try another one...
Does that make sense? And is it possible to put it back in later? Are there known issues about the Elsa Gladiac 511 TV-OUT (nVidia GeForce2 MX-400)?

OK, I did not replace the graphics adapter yet, but tried using the textmode installation... with the same results...
It now finishes the base installation on the first try and then reboots from HD and asks for the second CD... installs all of it and then the screen goes black and the machine freezes... only difference is the noexistend X cursor... :(
