[opensuse] USB MODEM

Hi all, I want to buy a USB MODEM and wanted to ask if anyone has had such experience. I have read very disappointing stories about USB devices not working with Linux systems. But I have experienced external DVD drive and USB memory which work fine with OpenSUSE. Any tip would be appreciated.
