I want to open pdf attachments with okular, but when click to open the attachment, my only option is to open with GIMP. the dialog box does not allow me to choose another application besides GIMP, which is the default. How do I configure thunderbird so that I can choose the application to open, or else set pdf files to open with okular?
George Edit/Preferences/Attachments/PDF --- select what you want done.

On my dialog screen for attachments, the table is blank. How do I a file type to the content type column on the attachments? There is no way to make a new entry. I assume that there is some way, but it isn't showing up on my screen. There is no need to manually add an entry in the table. The entries are made the first time a particular file with a given extension not defined in "System Settings--->File Associations"
Sorry, that should have been.... "Personal Settings--->File Associations".... Remember, there are 2 ways to define what applications are used. By MIME type and file extension.... Anyway, if you search for pdf in File Associations you would/could find that the choices are set to Okular and GIMP with Okular being at the top. If you don't have Okular installed...but have GIMP installed....it will be called. You can make changes here as well as in Thunderbird.
For example, send yourself a file with a weird extension, xxx.ase3, for example. When the email arrives you should see a the attachment name on the left side of the preview pane and a > character just to the left. Click on that and it will be expanded. Double click on that attachment name and you'll get a dialog box where you can assign the application to handle the file. Checking the "Do this automatically...." box will then add that action to the table.
