Yes. I always do.
You don't mention which version of 12.1 you installed - 32-bit or 64-bit;

nor how much RAM you have; nor what speed the cpu is; nor if you have installed the "real" driver for the video or still only using the default video driver which is installed.
None of those things should have an effect of hanging for 5 to 10 minutes. As wrote, the applications _are_ responsive, and top don't shows a load of bout.
Such long delays are most probably related to the network, I guess. Maybe there's a DNS lookup or something (the KDE menu shows the hostname, for example).
I had long delays that were caused by the video driver version (Nvidia). Once I went back to the previous version the problem went away.
