The rsync remote-update protocol allows rsync to transfer just the differences between two sets of files across the network connection ... -z, --compress compress file data during the transfer ... 'just the differences' means (a) it doesn't transfer files that haven't changed and (b) it only sends changed blocks within files. Plus it can compress the transmitted blocks.
