This happened to me w/ 6.0 and 6.1 but I just picked the pop downs and switched languages. It did it instantly and I was in english...all though I read some german and speak some .. comes from dating a German nanny :) You can pick the last menu and change the language right there.

No, this will not work (it's on our todo).
After starting xconfig, choose the very first menu item ("Sprache der Kernel Konfiguration"). Choose english. Now leave the program ("speichern"), and on the next start it will come up in english. Switching languages on the fly is not yet there.
But I really wonder why you get the german language in the first place. Do you have by any chance the german edition? On the international edition the default language for kernel configuration is english.
